On this installment of the podcast show, we dig deeper into the work of Crys Cole. Cole is a nomadic, Canadian sound artist whose work focuses on small scale sound environments, often employing contact mics and the subtlest of gestures to unlock the hidden sonic qualities and textures of everyday objects and surfaces. Over the past two decades, Cole has performed around the world and has collaborated with several other notable sound artists and improvisers, including Keith Rowe, Tetuzi Akiyama, and Mathieu Ruhlmann. She also has ongoing collaborations with James Rushford under the name Ora Clementi and with her own partner, Oren Ambarchi; their most recent album titled Hotel Record stands as one of my personal favorites from this past year. In addition to her sound work, Cole is also the acting director of Send + Receive in Winnipeg, one of the longest running festivals in North America devoted to experimental music and sound art. This upcoming Fall will mark its 20th year in existence, which is a remarkable milestone for a festival of this nature. I recently had a chance to speak with Crys via video chat in her current place of residence in Melbourne, Australia. We discussed aspects of her sound work, her various collaborations, and her involvement with Send + Receive. You’ll hear that interview throughout this installment of the podcast show, and you’ll also hear several selections from Cole’s discography, along with some tracks from artists who either performed at or whose work was featured at this past year’s Send + Receive festival. I hope you enjoy this episode. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or comments. As always, thanks for looking and listening.
