On this installment of the FFFoxy Podcast, we dig deeper into the shadowy world of the Korea Undok Group. From its beginnings in 2015, the Winnipeg-based Korea Undok Group has maintained a bit of a cryptic presence within the cassette underground: the name – being lifted from a spam email service – is applied to both the label and one of its core recording projects. The label has created a striking black-and-white, Xeroxed visual aesthetic that harkens back to early D.I.Y. punk and industrial eras, and it has gathered together a roster of artists that deal in heavily obscured, tape-saturated sounds to achieve divergent musical end results. In 2016, the U.K. label Penultimate Press took notice and released an LP compilation of some of Korea Undok Group’s earliest output. I recently had a chance to speak with Sam N., the creative force behind Korea Undok Group, and we discussed some of the details surrounding the label and the project, as well as some of the forthcoming releases they have in the works. You’ll hear this interview in segments throughout the show, and you’ll also get a chance to hear a decent overview of the label’s back catalog and forthcoming material, too.
