This past week, Jon Collin and Rob Noyes came to Mankato to perform at a KMSU sponsored show at The 410 Project with local band, Bee Balm Fields. Collin is an innovative and unconventional guitarist that hails from the U.K. but now resides in Stockholm, Sweden. Drawing comparisons to the likes of Loren Connors, Derek Bailey, and Jack Rose, Collin has issued numerous releases over the past decade, many on his own Winebox Press and Early Music imprints. Rob Noyes, from out of Boston, issued his debut long player “The Feudal Spirit” in 2016, a release that garnered favorable reviews and marked him as a talented new acoustic player within the rich and varied American Primitive tradition. Before the night got underway, they were kind enough to swing by the KMSU studios to perform a short set each. Joining them in the studio, and on this Midwest stretch of their tour, was the Minneapolis-based acoustic guitar slinger, Matt Beachey, who records under the alias, Oscar Tengo. Beachey collaborates regularly with fellow Twin Citian, Steve Palmer, and he also operates the Southern Jukebox Music website and label that documents live performances on reel-to-reel tape.
In the first half of this installment, you’ll hear a couple of tracks from each of these artists’ releases followed by their short individual in-studio performances. Everything is sequenced in the order that we recorded them, so you’ll be hearing from Rob Noyes, followed by Oscar Tengo, and closing with Jon Collin. In the second half of the show, I get into a stack of new music that I’ve really been admiring of late. I hope you enjoy this episode. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or comments. As always, thanks for looking and listening.
