On this installment of the podcast, I dig into the vast musical universe of Dereck Higgins, an artist and musician who has been active in the Omaha, Nebraska music community since the 1970s. Higgins has played in numerous bands over the years including Norman & The Rockwells, Digital Sex, RAF, InDreama, and Son, Ambulance to name a few. More recently, he has also been playing in the David Nance Group, which through that connection I was able to discover Higgins’ impressive back catalog of self-released solo material, along with his highly enjoyable and insightful YouTube channel that he has been doing for over a decade now where he not only discusses records from his collection but also reflects on what’s happening in his life and in the world around us. This past week, I was able to chat with Dereck about his musical background, his solo recordings, and his YouTube channel. We also spent some time discussing his excellent new album called Future Still that was released just a few weeks ago on the Chicago-based label, FPE Records. You’ll get to hear the entirety of that interview in segments throughout the show, along with a broad overview of the music that Dereck has been making for the past four decades. I hope you enjoy this episode. Feel free to get in touch if you have any comments or questions. As always, thanks for looking and listening.
