On this installment of the show, I dig into the work of the Elevator Bath label. Started in 1998 by Colin Andrew Sheffield, the now Austin, Texas-based Elevator Bath recording label has issued experimental works from a variety of artists from the United States and abroad. Their catalog covers a nebulous area of music that draws from interesting overlapping elements of ambient, drone, noise, plunderphonics, musique concrète, and other uncategorizable electronic sounds, or as the label describes it: “Elegant abstract music: Highly developed, often atmospheric, subtly intense, always open to interpretation.”

I recently had a chance to chat with Sheffield about the background of Elevator Bath and the different considerations that have gone into running the label over the years. We also discussed his own solo music and his long-running collaboration with James Eck Rippie. You’ll hear that interview in a few different segments throughout this show, and you’ll also hear selections from several Elevator Bath releases, including a track from Sheffield’s forthcoming solo release coming out next year on the label.
