On this episode of the podcast, we dig into the work of the Baltimore-based cassette label, Ultraviolet Light. The label was started back in 2015 and has issued a wide range of highly exploratory and unconventional electronic and improvised music. Ultraviolet Light is run by Jimmy Joe Roche, an interdisciplinary artist whose work encompasses video and film, sculpture and visual art, performance and sound art, and much more. Roche has been an active participant in the Baltimore underground music and art community dating back to the early-to-mid 2000s through his involvement in the Wham City Collective and later in the city’s improvised music community through the High Zero Collective. Throughout this time, Roche has been a close collaborator with fellow Baltimore-based musician and composer, Dan Deacon. In addition to his various artistic pursuits, Roche is also currently a Senior Lecturer in the Film and Media Studies Department at Johns Hopkins University.
This past week I had a chance to speak with Jimmy, and we discussed his involvement in the Baltimore DIY music community, his motivation for starting Ultraviolet Light, his history with making sound, and his work as a filmmaker, amongst other topics.
