On this episode of the podcast show, I dig deeper into the work of the Morgantown, West Virginia-based cassette label, Crash Symbols. Started in 2010, the label was an outgrowth of the music blogs Get Off the Coast and later Decoder Magazine which partners Dwight & Liz Pavlovic were actively involved in. Crash Symbols has since gone on to put out over 150 releases from a wide range of artists from around the world. Their catalog runs the stylistic gamut from ambient works and beat tapes to indie pop and post-rock music and all points between. Yet, there is an exploratory psychedelic quality that runs throughout much of their catalog, both sonically and visually, that creates a fairly unifying aesthetic as a whole.
This past week, I had a chance to speak with Dwight and Liz about the history of Crash Symbols, their days of being involved in music blogs, the skills that they bring to running a label, and much more. It’s worth noting that I was a contributor to Decoder Magazine for a while and helped them produce a podcast, so I have worked with Dwight and Liz in the past, which made our interview for this show a bit more loose and informal than usual. But, you’ll get to hear that interview in a few different segments throughout the show, along with track selections from several releases from the Crash Symbols catalog. Hope you enjoy this episode. Feel free to get in touch if you have any comments or questions. As always, thanks for looking and listening.
