For this installment of the FFFoxy Podcast, it was a pleasure to have Eric Frye join me in the KMSU studios. Eric is a Minneapolis-based electro-acoustic composer and artist, whose work explores various aspects of spatialisation, psychoacoustics, and other conceptual realms. Eric operated the now defunct Scumbag Relations and Sleepy Cobalt Sounds tape labels over the past decade, and in recent years he has hosted Splice Free, a digital radio series examining experimental composition of the past and present. Eric performed a new piece for us live in the studio, and he stuck around to discuss his work with me afterwards. We were also extremely fortunate to have Geurino Mazzola join us by phone from Europe for a brief conversation. Guerino is a University of Minnesota professor in the School of Music. He has written several books over the past three decades on his mathematical music theory, the most widely cited being The Topos of Music. During those years, Mazzola has also been active as a free jazz pianist, releasing several recordings in various line-ups, and he has developed different computer music software programs. Guerino discussed some of his ideas about music and his various activities, which have had a significant impact of Eric’s recent work. We rounded out the show with a selection of tracks chosen by Eric in what could be described as a bit of a Splice Free take over of FFF. Check out Eric Frye’s website for more information about his various musical, artistic, and curatorial pursuits, or head over to his Bandcamp page to purchase some of his available recordings. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or comments. Hope you enjoy.
