For this installment of the FFFoxy Podcast show, we put together a special feature devoted to the work of Penultimate Press, both the label and the finely stocked mail order outlet. Run by Mark Harwood out of London, Penultimate Press has been active for the past five years or so issuing crucial archival and reissue works, alongside more contemporary releases, from artists working in that grey area between electro-acoustic composition, sound art, and other avant garde practices. Harwood, though, has a long history of working in this area of music, going back to the mid-90’s with his label and shop called Synaesthesia that he ran in Melbourne, Australia. On this show, we talk with Mark about his past, present, and future activities surrounding Penultimate Press, including discussion of the extensive Jacques Brodier release that is coming out in just a few weeks and of his own sound work that he has been recording under the name, Astor. Mark was also kind enough to include some music that he’s been enjoying of late throughout the second half of the show and to lend his adept audio editing skills to, as you’ll hear, put a personalized stamp on our interview segments. We hope you enjoy this show as much as we have in assembling it. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or comments. As always, thanks for looking and listening.
(Correction: Apologizes to Derek Baron, who I incorrectly referred to as Marc at the very start of the show. Not sure if I was thinking of the Marc Baron who was responsible for that “Hidden Tapes” release or if there was a subconscious Marc Bolan name association going on or what, but Derek’s wonderful album Crooked Dances was literally sitting right in front of me as I was speaking into the mic and I still screwed it up.)
